Hope House Foundation's 31st Annual Dinner
On, June 18th Hope House Foundation celebrated their 31st Annual Dinner “Creating Masterpieces/Developing Partnerships” hosted by the foundation’s Board of Directors at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. The Hope House Board of Directors, Hope House employees, people we support, and community members gathered for an exciting evening honoring individuals for their accomplishments.
Each year, Hope House Foundation recognizes employees for their years of service with the agency. This year we honored employees of 3, 5, 10, 15, and 30 years. Hope House Foundation is so proud to have outstanding, dedicated employees that ensure the best quality of life for the individuals that we support.
Hope House Foundation has created masterpieces and developed partnerships that are so strong and valued that the evening would not have been complete without honoring three individuals that have made a difference in our foundation. Community Award Recipients included Judge Richard S. Bray of the Beazley Foundation and Maurice A. Jones from The Virginian Pilot. Jim Newsom from Old Point National Bank was honored with “The Jeff Miller Award.”
The Beazley Foundation
Judge Richard S. Bray is President and CEO of Beazley Foundation, Inc. Born and raised in Portsmouth, VA, Judge Bray served on the Third Judicial Circuit and the Virginia Court of Appeals before retirement, assuming his current position in 2002. Beazley Foundation, Inc. is a private foundation founded in 1948 with funds provided by Mr. Fred W. Beazley, his wife Marie C. Beazley, and his son, Fred Beazley, Jr., of Portsmouth, Virginia. The Foundation has provided nearly $150,000 in grants to support Hope House Foundation over the past seven years. Judge Bray stated, “with respect to the Foundation, I aspire to continuing Mr. Fred W. Beazley’s legacy of unselfish service and generosity to the people of Hampton Roads.”
The Virginian Pilot
Maurice A. Jones joined The Virginian-Pilot in 2005 and has led the organization as President and Publisher since 2008. The Virginian-Pilot has served our region for more than 140 years and remains committed to this day to serve the public with integrity and vision.
In a recent article, Mr. Jones summed up his affinity for Hampton Roads by saying, “This region is rich in assets: its people, ports, tourist attractions, military, educational institutions, businesses, nonprofits, faith institutions, to name a few. Those blessings make me optimistic about our region’s future.” The Virginian-Pilot has provided more than $200,000 in grant support to Hope House Foundation over the past decade.
The Jeff Miller Award
The Jeff Miller Award was inspired by Jeff Miller who served on the Hope House Foundation board of directors for a decade. He was the first corporate sponsor of the Stockley Gardens Arts Festival, a business professional who challenged the organization to reach past its vision and believed that the mission of Hope House Foundation to build communities that included all citizens was of utmost importance.
Jim Newsom is Regional Executive Officer and Senior Vice President of Old Point National Bank. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, son of an Episcopal priest living in several different places as a kid, moving to Suffolk, Virginia when he was eleven spending his growing years there. Jim considers himself a Suffolk native even though he’s been a Norfolk resident for roughly 27 years. Jim was the first person hired by Old Point in 1999 when they opened their first office on the southside of Hampton Roads. He recently celebrated 10th anniversary with the bank. He’s been a banker since 1981, but a musician for a lot longer! Under Jim’s leadership, Old Point National Bank has worked closely with Hope House Foundation in providing loans on property acquired through the Foundation’s Residential Corporation, as well as sponsoring many of the organizations fundraising events. Jim stated “my goal as a banker has always been to try to do what’s best for my customers, treat them as I would like to be treated, be honest and forthright, enjoy every day, and try to live up to the principles instilled in me as a child. I hope that by doing that, I will succeed in my work and life.”
