![]() “Many of the barriers to community living for people with disabilities are systemic and do not
relate directly to their ability to rent or own their home and maintain it on a day-to-day basis.”

Imagine making less than $10,000 a year and trying to find an affordable place to live in Hampton Roads. That’s the reality for the low-income people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community. With a regional average rental rate of more than $870 a month, this financial burden is a major barrier to community life for people with disabilities. At Hope House we believe all people, regardless of ability, have the right to privacy, freedom and independence — and the right to participate in community life. We don’t see barriers — we create opportunities. Our approach is simple. We purchase small apartment buildings in safe neighborhoods, set affordable rents, and rent the apartments to people we support and other low-income citizens in the community — in order to ensure community integration for the people we serve. Our model supports the people we serve and improves the lives of other members of our community who struggle to find safe, affordable housing. Our Annual Fund will create 100 new apartment units for Hope House — apartments with reasonable rental rates, in safe neighborhoods. Apartments with modifications to support the needs of people with disabilities, with easy access to shopping, recreation and public transportation — the kind of apartment you would want for your sister, father or friend You hold the key to a bright future for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in our community. Turn that key, donate now.
