Drive for Affordable Housing

“Many of the barriers to community living for people with disabilities are systemic and do not relate directly to their ability to rent or own their home and maintain it on a day-to-day basis.”

Drive for Affordable Housing
The 2007 Hope House Capital Campaign

The average rent in Hampton Roads today is more than $860 a month. Which is daunting enough for the average family – but even more so for individuals with developmental disabilities, like the people supported by Hope House Foundation. In fact, 98% of the people we support live on $10,000 or less each year – well below poverty line.

And they’re not the only ones. More than 20% of the households in Hampton Roads – not just those that include people with developmental disabilities – are considered to be extremely low income. In this income bracket, affordable housing is defined as rent that is less than $400 a month. And that’s all but impossible to find in our community.

It doesn’t take a degree in math to see that the numbers just don’t add up.

Hope House is the only organization in Virginia that supports people with developmental disabilities exclusively in their own homes. And we do that by providing safe, affordable and sustainable housing options and support services in neighborhoods throughout Hampton Roads.

Our approach is simple. We purchase small apartment buildings in safe neighborhoods, set affordable rents, and rent the apartments to the people we support, as well as to other low-income citizens without disabilities. It’s an approach that not only helps the people we support, but also improves the lives of people without disabilities in Hampton Roads who can’t find safe, affordable housing.

With the funds from our Drive for Affordable Housing Capital Campaign, we plan to purchase 100 apartment units in Virginia Beach and Norfolk. And with your help, we can help build a brighter, safer, and more affordable future for everyone in the community.
